Northern Hills Training Center CEO
Fred Romkema served as mayor of Spearfish in the early to mid 90’s. As the Executive Director of the Northern Hills Training Center, Fred has represented and served as an advocate for the agency in Pierre on numerous occasions over three decades.
Raised on a farm near Armour, SD, Fred has been a resident of Spearfish for over 30 years. He graduated with a bachelor's degree and then a master's degree in speech and hearing pathology from the University of South Dakota. He began his career in the Northern Hills as a speech and hearing therapist in the Lead-Deadwood School District and traveled throughout the region conducting speech and hearing examinations for students.
During the late 70's, he was also a co-owner of Mountain Goat Sports in Deadwood. Fred is also immediate past president of the American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR), a national organization of "providers of quality support to people with disabilities." He has years of community involvement including current service to the Regional Health Board, Spearfish Regional Hospital Advisory Board, South Dakota Development Corporation Board, First Western Bank Advisory Board, Hospice Board, Spearfish Planning and Zoning Commission, Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee, Prairie Hills Transit Board and he is long-time member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church as well as the Kiwanis Club.
